Dr. Paul Sum

Dr. Paul W. Sum, age 86, of Bluffton, South Carolina, formerly of Ellicottville, NY and Salamanca, NY. died Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Hilton Head Hospital, Hilton Head, SC following a long illness.

Born on September 2, 1925 in Shanghai, China he was the son of the late James & Jessie Toong Sum. He was married on May 9, 1953 in Chicago, IL to the former Evelyn Linstra who survives.

Dr. Sum was a graduate of The University of Pennsylvania Medical School of St. John's University in Shanghai, China.

He was a veteran of the US Army serving as a Physician during the Korean Conflict in Augsburg, Germany.

Dr. Sum came to the US in 1949 where he began practicing medicine at Roseland Hospital in Chicago, IL. Then he moved to the NYC area and was on the Medical staff at Wycoff Heights Hospital in Brooklyn. Next he and his family moved to Loudonville, NY where he practiced medicine at the VA Hospital in Albany, NY. In 1964, he moved to Salamanca, NY where he served as the Head of Radiology Department at the former Salamanca District Hospital and started his own private medical practice. In addition. he served on the Radiology Department for Springville Hospital and the Cuba Memorial Hospital in Springville and Cuba, New York.

With an interest in flying, he became a flight physician. He was a member of the Flying Physicians Association. He was past President of the local chapter of the American Medical Association. He was a member of the Radiological Society of North America. He was a long time member of Elkdale Country Club, a member of Holiday Valley where he enjoyed skiing, and he served as a Cattaraugus County Coroner from 1969 to 1987 and Coroner's Physician from 1993 to 1996.

Surviving besides his wife are his brother, Peter (Cathy) Sum of Toronto, Canada, 3 daughters, Suzy (Paul) Stetz, Little Valley, NY, Cyndy (Gregory) Ford, Bluffton, SC, Beverly Jane Sum, Bluffton, SC; 2 sons, Robert (Rose) Sum, Springboro, Ohio, John "Jay" (Robin) Sum, Warner Robins, GA; 7 grandchildren, Havilah, Irene and Jennifer Ford, Olivia Stetz, Emma Sum, and Emily and Nathan Sum.

He was predeceased by 2 grandchildren, Julie Stetz and Haley Sum.

Visitation will be on Monday, December 12, from 5-7 pm at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd Bluffton, SC. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 13, at 10:00 am at the Grace Coastal Church, 15 Williams Dr. Okatie, SC 29909. Burial will be the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary St, Beaufort, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Coastal Church Benevolence Fund. Local arrangements will be announced at a later time.
