Edward Schmittendorf

Mr. Edward Schmittendorf, age 70, of Great Valley, New York and Ft. Pierce, Florida died unexpectedly Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Olean General Hospital.

Born on November 12, 1937 in Buffalo, New York he was the son of the late Edward H. Schmittendorf and Ruth Schara Schmittendorf of Eden, New York who survives.

He was married on July 2, 1988 in Ellicottville, New York to the former Cheryl Warner Owens who survives.

Mr. Schmittendorf was a graduate of Eden High School, Class of 1956 and State University of New York at Morrisville, where he majored in Food Technology and received his Associates Degree in Applied Science.

He was Veteran of the United States Army serving in the Veterinary Corp. in Austria and Germany, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Schmittendorf was employed at Changing Seasons in Salamanca, New York as a Senior Drug and Alcohol Counselor from 1987 retiring in 1997. He had previously been employed as a Correction Officer at the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department from 1986 - 1987 and at West Way Trading, Lackawanna, New York from 1969 - 1986.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars John F. Ahrens Post #5296, Salamanca, New York, the American Legion Hughes Skiba Post #535, Salamanca, New York and coached SYA Basketball in Salamanca, New York. He was a former member of the Jaycees, Eden, New York and St. John's United Church of Christ, Eden, New York where he was a former deacon; was an avid fisherman and hunter

Surviving besides his wife are: 2 daughters, Belinda Spence, North Collins, New York and Bridgit (Dave) Gerspacher, Eden, New York; 1 son, Brett (Kim) Schmittendorf, Depew, New York; 1 step son, Brad (Danielle) Owens, Salamanca, New York; 1 granddaughter, Stephanie Gerspacher, Eden, New York; 2 brothers, Thomas (Karen) Schmittendorf, North Boston, New York, James (Bonnie) Schmittendorf, Enterprise, Alabama; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Eden Schmittendorf.

There will be no visitation.

Friends may attend a memorial service on Tuesday (May 13, 2008) morning at 11:00 A.M. in the O'Rourke & O'Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, New York with Pastor Joshua Schallert, of the United Congregational Methodist Church, officiating.

The family suggests memorials to Home Care & Hospice, 1225 West State Street, Olean, New York 14760 or Roswell Memorial Park.
