Eugene R. Scharf

Mr. Eugene R. Scharf, 83, of Green Valley Estates, Great Valley, New York died Thursday evening, August 6, 2015 at the Pines Health and Rehab Center in Machias, New York following a long illness.

Born June 20, 1932 in Ellicottville, New York, he was the son of the late Leo and Mary Mahl Scharf. He was married November 27, 1954 in the Holy Name of Mary Church, Ellicottville, New York to the former Sybil Aumock, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Scharf had been employed as a carpenter and mason at Scharf Brothers in Ellicottville, New York for 35 years.

He was a member of the Holy Name of Mary Church, Ellicottville and the Ellicottville American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards and the outdoors, especially hunting. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving besides his wife are: a daughter, Melody Sloand, SC; two sons, Robert (Joan) Scharf, Thomas (Karen) Scharf, both of Ellicottville, NY; 5 granddaughters, Renee (Mitch) Thompson, Spartanburg, SC, Joelle (Baker) Street, Philadelphia, PA, Brooke (Andrew Kasprzak) Scharf, Mansfield, NY, Danna Scharf, Ellicottville, NY, Tarah Scharf, Ellicottville, NY; 3 grandsons, Kevin (Casey) Sloand, Spartanburg, SC, Justin (Crystal Hoang) Scharf, New York City, NY, Eric Scharf, Ellicottville, NY; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by 5 brothers, Donald Scharf, Edward Scharf, James Scharf, Germain Scharf, Charles Scharf, and 2 sisters, Rita Oyler Ocollan and Margaret McAndrew.

There will be no visitation.

A Memorial Mass will be held in Holy Name of Mary Church, Ellicottville, NY on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ronald Mierzwa, officiating.

Full military honors will be conducted by members of the Ellicottville American Legion.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc Funeral Home, 25 River Street, Salamanca, New York.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Ellicottville, New York.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Pines of Machias or Total Senior Care of Olean, NY.
