John Miller, age 89, of Front Street, Olean, New York, formerly of East Street, Salamanca, New York, died Friday evening, January 23, 2009 at Olean General Hospital following a brief illness.

Born on March 27, 1919 in Salamanca, New York he was the son of the late Charles and Mildred Johnston Miller. On April 24, 1942 in St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Olean, New York he married the former Vita Cucchiaro who survives.

Mr. Miller was a veteran of the U.S. Army servivng in World War II in the European Theatre.

He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad for 20 years, did construction work and retired from Lyons Equipment Company in Little Valley, New York.

Mr. Miller was an avid fisherman,, enjoyed gardening, loved animals, and was especially fond of dogs.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 66 years are: a son, John (Mary) Miller, Olean, New York; 2 daughters, Christine Dunkleman, Sandra Thompson, both of Winter Garden, Florida; 8 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Burkhart, Falconer, New York; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Esther Miller, and a brother, David Miller.

At the request of the decedent, there will be no public visitation or services.

Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, New York.

Memorials may be made to the SPCA or a charity of the donor's choice.
