Joseph Sexton

Mr. Joseph Sexton, age 77, formerly of State Park Avenue, Salamanca, New York died early Friday morning, December 4, 2009 at Olean General Hospital, Olean, New York following a long illness.

Born on February 18, 1932 in Hornell, New York he was the son of the late Harry & Margaret Brill Sexton. He was married in St. Mary’s Church, Little Valley, New York on September 5, 1953 to the former Joann K. Didas who predeceased him on May 11, 1995.

He was a graduate of Canisius College in Buffalo, New York and St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York.

Mr. Sexton was employed for over 35 years at the Salamanca Central School District as a teacher and Junior High Principal prior to his retirement.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Church, Salamanca, New York, St. Vincent DePaul Society, and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of Elkdale Country Club. Also, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are: 2 sons, Thomas (Ann) Sexton, Fairport, New York, Matthew (Lynette) Sexton, Little Valley, New York; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Gilbert, a sister Mary Van Voorhis, 2 brothers, Thomas Sexton, Daniel Sexton.

Friends may call at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca, New York on Sunday from 2-5 P.M.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:30 A.M. in Our Lady of Peace Church with Rev. Patrick Melfi, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Salamanca, New York.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Kidney Foundation or the Friends of Strays.
